A new fly-on-the-wall reveals just what it takes to be a TV shopping host.

The Good Buy Girls, which premieres on the TLC network on June 5, follows Brook Roberts and Tara Gray behind-the-scenes as they front their long-running slot on the DSN channel.

During the course of the 12-part series the dynamic duo, who have more than 20 years of combined on-air experience, show how they spend much of their time testing out products before selling them on screen.

In a sneak peek for the TLC show Ms Gray, 34, says to the camera: ‘If we’re going to venture out and really sell new consumer products we’ve got to make sure they’re good and that they really are BT [Brook and Tara] approved.’

The clip then shows the hosts trying out a selection of spray tans at the home they share in Southern California.

Ms Gray continues: ‘When it comes to spray tanning there are certain criteria that make certain products better than others.

‘First of all the smell has to smell good, you can’t smell like burnt skin. Secondly, it has to look beautiful, you can’t look like an Oompa Loompa.

‘Thirdly, it has to go on evenly and easily.’

Ms Gray and Ms Roberts specialize in selling jewellery and gemstones but on the documentary they attempt to mix-up their product offering in a bid to capture a wider audience.

Some of the more unusual items they decide to promote include ‘menopause pajamas’ and dog treadmills.

At one point they even take a trip to a manufacturing plant to gain insight into how one potential beauty product is made.

Prior to joining the DSN team three years ago, Oregon-native Ms Roberts held the title of Miss Oregon 2004 and competed in the Miss America 2005 pageant.
